The other day I decided to show Alex a deck of cards and asked if he’s like to play a game. He was actually a little resistant (surprisingly to me), but I pushed a little as I was pretty sure it would be something he’s like to do with me. And it would be something that Daniel cannot yet do so would give us a ‘special time’ opportunity. Card games remind me of my grandparents. We spent so many hours with them playing in school holidays. We chose that over TV, over outside, going to the park. We usually played after we selected our horses from the newspaper that were racing that day, and had calculated what we would have won if we’d placed 50p on the first horse! I credit this as my first maths experiences!!! Anyway, I asked Alex to let me show him how to play one game and if he didn’t like it then we would stop, he agreed. And so we played snap. Well he loved it, so we kept playing. He quickly got the hang of holding so many cards with his fat little fingers pulling off the top card like a pro. He’s fascinated by shuffling, and I’m not great at it so I may show him some youtube clips of fancy moves. I also showed him game called clockwork, which can be played independently but played together a is like a little challenge in the way solitaire/patience is. We have played cards every night since. I’ll show him some more games, and hopefully he’ll find his own favourite. But I hope they’ll be fond memories.
