Unschooling WWGUT (What We Got Up To)

Reflection of 2015!

So here are some of the great things that we’ve done besides the backyard play, football, karate, ju-jitsu, beach, swimming, zoo, farms, gymnastics, camping, scienceworks, museum, childrens garden, NGV, miniature railways, artplay events, movie watching, pigeon racing, chicken breeding, play dates, park days, fireworks, RAAF museum, water play parks, Bounce (trampoline centre) etc.

Brickworks lego expo – Alex and Vio visited the lego exhibition at the REB. They spent ages in there! And Alex came out with some new lego 🙂

The Tiger Who Came To Tea at Arts Centre – We went to see this with friends as part of the Arts Centre summer showings. Alex enjoyed it, but it was not my favourite.

Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo at the Arts Centre – We went on an excursion with our homeschool group to watch this (I organised). Alex really enjoyed it, though many other kids got frightened! The dinosaurs were quite impressive.

Carnival of the Animals at the Arts Centre – this was an amazing show with no speaking (or singing yay), just acrobatics. There was one particular member of the cast that intrigued Alex – he was incredibly strong and could break dance! This has sparked an interest for Alex.

Adventure Playground at Geelong – We attended the Not Going Back to School Party with a lot of hs’ers. It was a fun day, tiring and a bit chilly for water play!

Clean Up Australia Day – We cleaned up our beloved Brimbank Park 🙂

Model Railway Exhibitions – We attended 4 this year! Sandown, Caulfield, Sunbury and Sunshine. The first 2 were by far the best, and Alex located the longest trains at each of them. Daniel is also a train fan!

Fire station safety display – District fire station runs fortnightly educational sessions displaying equipment, giving tours and even putting out fires. This was the first one of the year so nice and quiet but the kids got to dress up and use the hose!

Bounce – I’ve been organising activities for out local homeschool community to help Alex meet new people as his friends enter the school system in 2015. One of these activities was at Bounce – a trampoline centre. The kids had loads of fun, playing games or just solo jumping.

Fireworks at Footscray Park for NYE – We enjoyed the family NYE festivities and fireworks display. Great way to spend an evening.

Superbox Friends at Artplay – Alex attended a workshop where you build a box thing around a motor and watch it move!

Argus at Artplay – this was a silent puppet show performed using props and parts made from rubbish and it was about rubbish. It was quite interesting. Alex enjoyed it

Junior Rangers – We attended JR activities at both Brimbank, Organ Pipes and Serendip Sanctuary. The latter was the discovery of a fabulous bird watching area, and really supported Alex’s interest in birds.

Full Flight Centre – we attended a display in a park by these guys and Alex was introduced to some birds of prey. A few weeks later we attended an open day and Alex got to hold and pat a number of these birds. It was amazing!

Snakes – We visited a snake keepers home and fed his snakes, had an encounter at the zoo with a python, went to a snake expo and attended a local talk about snakes in our area.

Supercars expo – Vio and Alex attended Motor Classica as Alex has had a like for lamborghinis in particular after seeing one drive past near our house. He has bought lots of toy cars and this day was a bit of fun for him to see lots close up.

Brimbank Bike Education Centre – we attended with a hs group and rode the mini world set up, with a requirement to obey all the road rules.Alex enjoyed this, as did Daniel – he was not great at the rules though and I spent the whole time chasing him!

Parkour – Alex tried parkour with some hs friends. He wants to do it again!

Science – we joined a science club briefly, but we’ve been trying to incorporate some experiments into our weeks.

Co-op – In the last part of the year, we joined and formed a co-op of hs families who are like-minded in how they raise and hs their kids. It’s been a great place for Alex to make some new friends and also supports his previous friendships in a place that is accepting of kids rather than judgemental. We’re organising lots of excursions and incursions, I hope 2016 will e a great one.

Lots more planned for 2016.
