Unschooling

An almost pictureless and quick summary of the week.

It’s 2017 and I’m yet to finish writing about December!

Home

Daniel was watching Mr Maker one morning and suddenly declared that he wanted to make shapes, so off we went to the play room. He got right to cutting. He made triangles first, of different sizes – shape families! He asked me to make them look like ‘the shapes’ so I drew faces.

Alex wanted to play ninjago , but Daniel had no ninjago lego to join in with so we made him a golden dragon (ok yellow) out of duplo.

We’ve played scalextric, had races.

We made lemonade, from fresh lemons! Alex asked me about it last week so i took the opportunity to occupy him on a home day! He said it was the best ever. Probably would have been nicer cold. We’ll try another time.

Alex and I have been playing minecraft too. We’ve started new worlds and built houses, even in survival mode. I really enjoy playing this with him! Alex has also been watching Michael Jackson videos as we mentioned his dancing and Alex likes to dance (and is very free when he does so!) He saw an ad for the new ‘Despicable Me’ movie and recognised the song ‘Bad’.

Alex has been playing with the neighbours, both at their house and at home. Or in the street. They play softball, football, ride bikes, lego, scalextric and iPad games.

A trip to the library saw us bring home a Maisy pop up book. The first time that Daniel and I read it, we laughed so hard! It’s quite cute. We’ve read little else since! Alex and I have read some of the library books too. But he seems resistant to the library in general at the moment. I’m not sure why.

Daniel has been loving the magnetic tiles and making 3D shapes. He makes a cake by building all the slices and connecting them.

We’ve all played on the trampoline together, and Daniel painted my face.

Beach day
We went to the beach with some friends. I had a water fight with the kids. it was windy. So Alex started kicking at an angle to me and said he was doing it because of the wind. He got me all right with his compensating! We dragged each other along the shoreline on the body board, me included! The kids played chase and were laughing their heads off. Was so nice. They played in the sand and swam too. Then after drying off we of course had to have chips and ice cream! How convenient they are sold in the same building!

Currawong Kids
The plan was to head to the billabong to see the turtles (nesting). However we never got there! We found the mulberry trees had some ripe fruit on them, so we went on a mulberry tree tour! The kids climbed lots of trees and ate lots of berries, ripe or not! We played games, sang songs. Alex loves the songs and we often sing them at home. We stopped at the creek and threw rocks, painted faces with paint made from rocks. At the end we had a little party.

Activities
Alex had little athletics training – last for 2016. Daniel played with the sibling of Alex’s friend and they decided to have a water fight. The kids had to drive home in their undies!

We also had an evening session for athletics as the last of the year. Santa came with some lollies. Alex didn’t get any PBs today, but had a great time both competing and playing football with the other kids.

Home school meet up
Our last Brimbank day for the year so we had a little party. The turnout was not great but the regulars came along. A friend of Alex’s that he doesn’t see much anymore attended and Alex was visibly happy about it. He played well with his friend the whole time, although they were both rude to siblings!

Play date
We went to a friends house – a long time friend. We see them regularly but most often in a group soi it was nice to catch up one on one.The kids played minecraft together and trains – they’ve long shared a passion in trains. Daniel was playing mummy’s and daddy’s with his friend. They were being quite cute, but also terrors. They made so much mess!

Other
We attended a friend’s surprise 40th. Alex found other kids (unknown) to play sports and video games with whilst Daniel occupied himself mostly. With us close by. He talks to himself a lot.

We also visited Vio’s parents and of course the boys go straight outside with Gigi to the birds!
