Heat, chess and Junior Rangers

The weekend was very, very hot. I don’t do well in the heat – it makes me grumpy! Also our house does not have air-conditioning, only evaporative which is fine until the heat is over 35 degrees. We spent the whole of Saturday morning at the local outdoor swimming pool keeping cool with a few of Alex’s friends who started their school holidays. It was fun, a few tears about name-calling and being left out but mostly an enjoyable and effective morning for cooling down! At home Alex spent a lot of time on the iPad, I can’t say i blame him as it was too hot to move! I watched some cartoons with him as Daniel napped, but once Daniel was up we escaped to Vio’s parents for some cooling! It started to rain so we went outside – the kids love going outside there because of the chickens and pigeons but they couldn’t in the heat and were disappointed. At home Alex continued on his iPad, playing games of chess, Wild Kratts and Where’s my water whilst I did puzzles and play dough with Daniel. He bought this Thomas tank puzzle with some Christmas money he received early 🙂

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhat a terrible night of sleep! So everyone slept in, more than usual, including me! I played chess with Alex and trains with Daniel. We put some more water in the pool and played there for a short time. The kids put some toys inside which I later noticed had been left inside, so I showed Alex some pictures of rusted metal and let him know this could happen to metallic objects left wet. He decided it would be ok to leave plastic in the water so we moved on.

On Monday we had the privilege of a special home-ed Junior Rangers sessions. The rangers from Brimbank Park wanted to do a trial run of the geological walk they planned on doing at Organ Pipes National park. The kids found some wallaby scats and dissected them to investigate diet, looked at rock formations, and found cicada skins. At home later we looked up some things about cicadas. Alex also wanted to know how salt was made, so we talked about salty oceans, I showed him some things online and talked about himalayan salt and his lamp being made from it, so he went to check by licking it!
