Big year! Aren’t they always?
We’veĀ gone through a lot regarding education – being signed up for an independent school, starting kinder, school tours, considering homeschooling and now unschooling. So here are some of the great things that we’ve done besides the backyard play, football, karate, ju-jitsu trials, rollerskating, beach, swimming, zoo, farms, camping, scienceworks, museum, childrens garden, NGV, miniature railways, artplay events, movie watching, truck show, pigeon racing, quail breeding, play dates, park days, fireworks, Bounce (trampoline centre) etc.
The Cat in the Hat at Arts Centre – Dr Seuss was a long running favourite before Alex turned 4. We saw a production at the Arts Centre. It was greatly enjoyed. Was great that we knew the story so well already and saw a new interpretation. It was very creative in imagery, for example balancing all of the objects on the ball by the Cat.
Truck Show – Alex is interested in trucks, particularly long ones with carriages. Vio took him to this free expo event.
Dreamworks exhibition at ACMI – Alex is crazy about ‘How to train your dragon’. In this exhibition, we got to ride on toothless (a 180deg screen of a flight over Burk from the perspective of riding Toothless)
Carrousels des Moutons – An amazing piece of theatre about a man that couldn’t get to sleep. Filled with music and acrobatics, this mime was captivating.
Inside the Brick lego expo – I took Alex to this to inspire him. He’s never really been much of a block builder, just a train track builder (some rather complex!) So we get to the expo and as we walk in there is a huge lego train track and town set up. Alex spent over an hour just watching. He asked the guys manning the stall a heap of questions. And now he wants a lego train set!
Fire station safety display – District fire station runs fortnightly educational sessions displaying equipment, giving tours and even putting out fires. There were lots of kinder groups so it was a little hectic, but Alex seemed to enjoy drill of putting out a car fire in particular, as well as seeing a fire engine sent out on a ‘for real’ job.
Bounce – I’ve been organising activities for out local homeschool community to help Alex meet new people as his friends enter the school system in 2015. One of these activities was at Bounce – a trampoline centre. The kids had loads of fun, playing games or just solo jumping.
Fireworks at Footscray Park for NYE – We enjoyed the family NYE festivities and fireworks display. Great way to spend an evening.
Lots more planned for 2015. Here’s some pics of the year:
